2017 Illinois QB favors Iowa early in the process
IOWA CITY, IOWA – The Iowa football team on Wednesday hosted another recruit from the 2017 class who has the potential to play multiple positions.
Cameron Thomas, who is from Chicago Heights, Ill., is being recruited as both a quarterback and as an athlete, but he said the Iowa coaches like him as a quarterback.
“They are recruiting me as a quarterback and will be coming to my school to watch me go through my quarterback workouts later this spring,” Thomas said Wednesday.
Thomas visited the Iowa campus for the second time on Wednesday and is now a big fan of the Hawkeyes.
Thomas does not yet have any scholarship offers. But he said Iowa has shown the most interest and is his favorite school at this stage. He also likes Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana and Ball State.
Thomas said he would be tempted to commit to Iowa if offered a scholarship.
“Oh yes. It would be amazing,” said Thomas, who is listed at 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds. “I would always keep in mind the first school who gave me a shot. Iowa seems like a great fit for me athletically and academically."
“But for right now I still have to get the offer and do more research on the college as a whole to make sure it’s the right fit for me.”
He has also garnered interest from Wake Forest, Syracuse, Central Michigan and Western Michigan.
Thomas is just one of many recent visitors to Iowa that have been awestruck by the facilities and embraced the family atmosphere of the Iowa program.
“I got a chance to see most of the campus and it was amazing,” Thomas said. “I really love the football facility and the coaches and players seem to have a genuine family bond.”
Thomas got the chance to talk with a number of members from the Iowa program including athletic director Gary Barta, head coach Kirk Ferentz, Brian Ferentz, Greg Davis and Broderick Binns.
Thomas said he plans to make an unofficial visit Minnesota this weekend. After that he will be taking visits to Indiana and Illinois State.
