Hawks still in the mix for receivers Maurice Bell and Shamond Greenwood
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Recruiting is a fluid process in which circumstances often can change overnight.
Recent evidence of that is three-star receiver Maurice Bell.
A native of Murrieta, Calif., Bell released his top five schools at the end of May, but quickly rescinded the list, which had included Iowa.
Even without a current list of favorites, Iowa remains in the mix for Bell.
“Iowa will always be in the mix,” Bell said Monday. “I just thought it was unfair to cut off all the different programs who gave me an opportunity and set a top five.
“I also didn’t want schools that were thinking about giving me an opportunity thinking they didn’t have a chance because I already had a top five.”
As far trying to establish a new top five, Bell still is trying to pick the right time to do it. But he is in no rush.
“I don’t think I’ll be re-announcing a top five anytime soon,” Bell said. “I have an idea of who I like, but it has changed a couple of times since I’ve taken (the top five) down.”
The 6-foot, 175-pound Bell said he plans to visit Arizona this coming weekend. He also hopes to visit Michigan in the next couple of weeks. Both schools were in Bell’s original top five, along with Iowa, Washington State and Colorado.
Bell doesn’t have a timetable for making a decision. He is more concerned right now with scheduling visits and learning as much as he can about each school.
“Once I’m done with these two visits, if I don’t visit Washington State I will be able to come up with a date,” Bell said. “I want to take my time and make sure I’m making the right decision.”
Greenwood planning to visit: Iowa has yet to sign a receiver in its 2017 recruiting class, but not from a lack of effort.
Iowa has offered scholarships to numerous receivers in the 2017 class, including several from Texas.
Shamond Greenwood was one of the first receivers from Texas to receive an Iowa offer. The Garland, Texas, native has’t visited Iowa yet, but he plans to this summer.
“They feel as though I can have a great positive affect on the team and would be a great fit into the program,” Greenwood said of the Iowa coaches.
Greenwood is no stranger to the Iowa coaches.
His teammate, dual-threat quarterback Kamron Fields, also has a scholarship offer from Iowa.
Greenwood would like to make his decision by the end of the summer. But he also wants to visit as many schools as possible before choosing.
His decision will be based on several key factors.
“Great football program, great coaching staff and great place to live with a great campus,” Greenwood said.
