Peter Jok picked first in PTL draft
IOWA CITY, Iowa – If you predicted that Peter Jok would be the first player taken in the Prime Time League draft on Sunday, congratulations because you were right, but probably not alone.
The 6-foot-6 Jok seemed like an obvious choice after coming off a season in which he was arguably the most improved player in the Big Ten. He more than doubled his scoring average to 16 points per game and made second-team all-Big Ten.
Jok declared himself eligible for the NBA Draft under a new rule that would allow him to return to college if he didn’t sign with an agent.
And that ultimately is what happened.
Jok explored his NBA options before deciding to return for his senior season.
The West Des Moines Valley graduate is Iowa’s only returning starter from last season.
Sophomore forward Nicholas Baer was taken second in the PTL draft followed by former Iowa City West star Dondre Alexander, former Iowa shooting guard Matt Gatens, who will serve as a player coach, redshirt freshman shooting guard Isaiah Moss, incoming Iowa freshman forward Tyler Cook, Northern Iowa small forward and former Iowa City West graduate Jeremy Morgan and Iowa sophomore point guard Christian Williams.
Iowa junior forwad Dom Uhl was the first player selected in the second round, followed by Iowa sophomore forward Ahmad Wagner and former Linn-Mar point guard Jordan Bohannon, who will be a freshman for the Hawkeyes this fall.
Four of Iowa’s five incoming recruits were drafted on Sunday. The exception was power forward Ryan Kriener from Spirit Lake.
PTL commissioner Randy Larson said Kriener was not in the draft because of an unspecified illness.
The PTL will play its games on Thursdays and Sundays at two locations, beginning with this Thursday’s opening night at the North Liberty Community Center, which has air-conditioning in both gymnasiums. Three of the Sunday sessions will be held in Waterloo.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the PTL, which was started by Larson in 1987. He now serves as the league’s commissioner in addition to coaching a team.
There is no cost for admission to any of the PTL games, including the playoffs.
