Monday’s podcast features former Iowa assistant FB coach Don Patterson
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Former Iowa assistant football coach Don Patterson is our guest on this podcast.
We spend the whole hour reminiscing about his 20 years on the Iowa staff under Hayden Fry. Patterson has the distinction of being the only assistant to be on the Iowa staff for all 20 seasons under Fry.
Patterson also served as head coach at Western Illinois from 1999-2009 and was as an assistant at Buffalo and Connecticut before retiring in January. Former Iowa linebacker Dob Diaco is the head coach at Connecticut.
Patterson tells a number of stories about working under Fry and about the players he coached while at Iowa. He also talks about being a member of Fry’s staff in the mid-1980s, along with fellow assistants Bill Brashier,
Kirk Ferentz, Bill Snyder, Dan McCarney and Bill Alvarez. Some consider that staff as one of the best in the history of college football.
Patterson also explains why he and his wife have decided to retire in the Iowa City area. He currently lives in Hills, but is building a new home in Coralville.
It’s an enjoyable hour with a person who helped rebuild the Iowa football program. So give it a listen.
