Two-sport athlete Chauncy Smart favors Iowa
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Two-sport athletes are few and far between at the Big Ten level.
The Iowa football program may soon have one, though, and share his talents with the Iowa track and field program.
Three-star athlete Chauncy Smart has more Division I offers in track and field than football, but he thinks he can play at the Division I level in both sports because of his blazing speed.
The Auburndale, Fla., native also feels that Iowa might be the place to take advantage of both opportunities.
"I’ve just been thinking about making my decision but not just yet," Smart said. "I am for sure favoring Iowa right now.
"I’ll play anywhere. But Iowa would want me to play special teams to use my speed. They said they can use my speed on kick returns and punt returns, and a little slot receiver."
Smart showcased his speed this past track season when he was clocked at a blistering 10.3 seconds in the 100-meter dash. The 5-foot-8, 175-pounder then went on to finish second in the 100 at the Florida state track meet in Class 3A, barely edged at the finish line.
Smart has been in contact with 2017 Iowa defensive back commit and fellow Florida native Josh Turner, who is trying to convince Smart to join him in Iowa City.
"He told me he wants me to join the family," Smart said. "We talk almost every other day and he said it’s lit up there in Iowa and they show love."
Smart said he plans to visit Iowa on Sept. 9 and will likely make his decision near the end of the football season.
