IOWA CITY, Iowa – The highest ranked recruit from the state of Iowa attended yet another Iowa football game on Saturday.

And the Hawkeyes put on quite a show for West Des Moines Dowling defensive end John Waggoner by crushing Big Ten power Ohio State 55-24 before a near sellout crowd at Kinnick Stadium.

The four-star recruit has scholarship offers from both Iowa and Ohio State, which made the matchup more interesting to watch.

“It was unbelievable to see and feel the atmosphere all night,” said Waggoner, who has attended several games at Kinnick Stadium. “It made it even more intriguing to watch because I have relationships with both sides.”

The 6-foot-5, 245-pound Waggoner saw his recruitment skyrocket in March. He received scholarship offers from both Michigan and Minnesota on the same day and now has multiple offers from some of the top programs in the country, including Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Iowa State, Kansas State, Louisiana State, Michigan State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State and UCLA.

Waggoner had originally planned to announce his commitment in August, but pushed it back because he needed more time to pick a school.

Waggoner is now one of the most decorated football recruits to come from Iowa.

“I’ll probably consider that more once my season has concluded,” Waggoner said about trimming his list of schools.

Waggoner said his focus now is on the Class 4A state semifinal matchup with Ankeny Centennial. West Des Moines Dowling is seeking its fifth consecutive state championship, but suffered its only loss in the regular season to Centennial.

Iowa currently has 14 players committed to its 2018 recruiting class.

Bargy wants to come back: Three-star defensive end Jason Bargy already had Iowa among his top four schools, but Saturday’s experience put the Hawkeyes above all but one.

Iowa’s victory over Ohio State impressed the 6-foot-5, 240-pound Bargy so much that it moved Iowa into the top two along with in-state rival Iowa State.

“It was electrifying from the beginning to the end,” Bargy said. “I was fired up right when I walked into the stadium. (Iowa) moved up to number two. They were number three. (My top four now is) Iowa State, Iowa, Minnesota and Michigan State.”

Bargy, a native of Momence, Ill., said that he likes what the Iowa program stands for and would like to make a return visit at some point.

“I like the culture, how the program runs and what they are about,” Bargy said. “The game was insane. I’ve definitely got to come back to Iowa City.”

Iowa currently has four players committed to its 2019 class.
