Dillion Doyle’s decision comes just days after his father was put on paid administrative leave as an independent review is conducted into allegations that he made racist comments to former players.
Chris Doyle released a statement on Sunday in which he denied the accusations. He posted his statement on social media about five minutes before Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz scheduled to have a zoom call with the media.
Dillon Doyle, a 2018 graduate of Iowa City West High School, appeared in all 13 games last season as a redshirt freshman, with three starts, and finished with 23 tackles. He played in four games in 2018, mostly on special teams, with two tackles.
Dillon Doyle also made Academic All-Big Ten last season.
He was expected to compete with sophomore Jack Campbell for the starting position at middle linebacker.
