IOWA CITY, Iowa – Purdue will be without head coach Jeff Brohm when it faces Iowa in the 2020 season opener Saturday in West Lafayette, Ind.
Brohm confirmed Monday he had a positive COVID-19 test and will follow CDC and Big Ten guidelines and self-isolate for 10 days.
“It’s unfortunate and it’s not ideal timing, but that’s the way the world works today,” Brohm said. “I think our team is in a great position right now to move forward.”
Brohm is the first Big Ten head coach to publicly announce a positive diagnosis, his test results coming days before the conference is scheduled to start its season.
Brohm’s younger brother and offensive coordinator, Brian Brohm, will assume the head coaching responsibilities this week and during Saturday’s game.
Jeff Brohm has yet to name a starting quarterback for Saturday’s season opener, and said Monday he would consider playing two quarterbacks.
Sophomore Jack Plummer and junior Aidan O’Connell are competing for the starting quarterback position.
Purdue also will welcome back star receiver Rondale Moore, who missed most of last season due to injury.
Brohm is entering is fourth season as the Purdue head coach and has a 17-21 record at Purdue, including 2-1 against Iowa.
