After record-setting prep career at Regina Alec Wick didn’t have to look far to find his future football home.

One of the most prolific pass catchers in state history, Wick gave a verbal commitment to join the Iowa football program as a walk-on with a post on social media on Sunday.

“Excited to announce I’m going to be a Hawkeye,” Wick wrote on Twitter. “Thank you to everyone that helped me along the way.”

Wick concluded an impressive prep career by leading Regina to the Class A state title last month while becoming the state’s career leader in receptions.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Wick closed his career with 242 receptions, the most for an 11-man player in state history, and 3,655 receiving yards which ranks third all-time.

The previous state record for career receptions was 239 by former West High standout Oliver Martin.

Former Iowa and current Detroit Lions tight end TJ Hockenson is third on the state’s career reception list with 238 putting Wick among elite company.

A two-time, first-team all-state selection, Wick finished with 38 career receiving touchdowns which ranks sixth all-time.

Over the past two seasons Wick was almost unstoppable, posting consecutive seasons with at least 75 receptions, more than 1,100 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns.

Wick had a career-high 79 receptions for 1,161 yards and 14 touchdowns in 11 games as a junior in 2019.

In his first season back from a hip injury that ended his junior season Wick caught 75 passes for 1,401 yards and 16 touchdowns this fall.

His 1,401 receiving yards are the 12th highest single-season total ever and came in 12 games as Regina won its final 11 games on its way to capturing the Class A title.

Wick was at his best in the UNI-Dome, catching a combined 18 passes for 354 yards and a touchdown in semifinal and championship game wins.

In his final prep game Wick caught nine passes for a Class A state title game record 226 yards and a touchdown and also rushed for 42 yards and made five tackles in a 52-28 win over top-ranked Grundy Center.

In addition to football Wick is a four sport standout that has led the Regina soccer team to a pair of state titles while earning all-state honors twice and is a starter on the Regal basketball and baseball teams.
