Piscataway, New Jersey – The University of Iowa softball team defeated Rutgers in five innings on Sunday afternoon, 8-0.
Senior pitcher Allison Doocy threw the 18th no hitter in program history, and first since Feb 7, 2015 by Shayla Starkenburg. She struck out five batters in the performance and improved to 8-4 on the season.
“We were all ready to go today,” said Doocy “We are rolling right now. The bats were moving, and we are also doing really well on defense. I loved what I saw today, and I am ready for the next few weeks.”
The Hawkeyes had the run support behind Doocy as they needed only five innings to dispatch the Scarlet Knights.
Junior Riley Sheehy had a 2-for-3 day with two RBIs on a double to deep centerfield. Freshman Brylee Klosterman hit her second home run of the season and tallied two RBIs in the game on 2-of-3 hitting.
“I have been seeing the ball really well,” said Klosterman. “I wasn’t trying to hit one over I was just trying to get on. I didn’t know it was over until everyone started screaming. I am just trying to see the ball and get on for my teammates, and bring them around as well.”
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawkeyes got off to a fast start as Klosterman hit a lead off home run on the third pitch of the game. Iowa added three runs in the second as Grace Banes and Amber DeSena walked, Sammy Diaz singled, and Klosterman singled scoring Banes. Riley Sheehy doubled off the wall in center to score DeSena and Diaz.
A four run fourth would be all it took. Diaz reached on an error, Sheehy singled, Denali Loecker reached on a fielders choice, Burns walked, and Marissa Peek doubled to bring home all three runs. Banes reached on a single to third base scoring Peek.
