City High shortstop Gable Mitchell commits to Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa – A name familiar to Iowa baseball fans will be returning to the black and gold soon.
Iowa City High shortstop Gable Mitchell, who is the son of former Hawkeye baseball player and current City High baseball coach Brian Mitchell, has committed to play for the Hawkeyes.
“Our family is very excited to see Gable join the Iowa baseball family,” Brian Mitchell said. “He is a lifelong Hawkeye and will be joining a terrific program.”
Gable Mitchell, the third-ranked player in Iowa in the 2022 class according to Perfect Game, hit 3.52 last season with a team-high 41 runs, 35 stolen bases and 24 walks and also drove in 30 runs.
Gable Mitchell helped lead City High to a 29-win season in 2021 that included a top-10 ranking and a share of the conference title.
Gable Mitchell also was a first-team all-conference selection.
Gable Mitchell will be teammates with Marcus Morgan of Iowa City West, who will join Iowa next season.
Gable Mitchell also plays football for City High and is the grandson of former Hawkeye wrestling coach Dan Gable, whom he is named after.
On the football field last season, Gable Mitchell had 15 receptions for 285 yards and three touchdowns, as well as nine rushing attempts for 44 yards and one touchdown.
Mitchell also wrestles at City High.
