Illinois 2024 forward Cooper Koch commits to Iowa basketball team

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Cooper Koch has taken a significant step from being just the son of a former Iowa basketball player to being an Iowa basketball player himself.
The Illinois native, who is the son of former Iowa forward J.R. Koch, announced his commitment to Iowa Thursday afternoon on Twitter.
A 6-foot-8 forward who attends Notre Dame High School in Peoria, Cooper Koch is believed to be the first player from the 2024 class to commit to Iowa.
He picked his father’s alma mater after having previously narrowed his list to Iowa, Purdue and Wisconsin.
Cooper Koch averaged averaged about 16 points, seven rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block per game as a sophomore.
He is also a standout player for the Indiana Elite on the AAU circuit and is ranked as th No. 51 player in his class by247Sports.
Koch’s father played for Iowa under Tom Davis from 1995-99 and finished his career with 891 points and 449 rebounds as a 6-10 forward.
J.R. Koch was also selected by the New York Knicks in the second round of the 1999 NBA draft, and with 46th pick overall.
Iowa coach Fran McCaffery has recruited a number of players who are sons of former Iowa players, including former All-America forward Keegan Murray, who is the son of former Iowa basketball player Kenyon Murray.
Keegan Murray’s twin brother, Kris Murray, will also be a junior forward for Iowa next season.
