Iowa Football Recruiting Roundup 12-9-22
Notes on Latest News for Hawkeyes
IOWA CITY, Iowa – College football’s transfer portal is spinning quickly, and Iowa is working on pulling out some help from it. It’s off to a good start with the addition of Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara.
McNamara’s Wolverine teammate, tight end Erick All, is joining the signal caller on an Iowa visit, which started Thursday. He tells his home-town Cincinnati Enquirer that he has the Hawkeyes, Washington and Notre Dame as his finalists.
All (6-5, 255) began this season as a Michigan captain before being is campaign ended early following spine surgery. In 35 games with the Wolverines, he tallied 54 catches for 565 yards.
Here’s a look at some more student-athletes in the portal with Iowa offers and interest:
–Isaac TeSlaa, 6-4, 210, WR, Hillsdale College: From the D-II school that supplied the Hawkeyes with former defensive end Zach VanValkenburg comes TeSlaa, who reports offers from Iowa, Iowa State, Oklahoma State and Houston so far. The reigning conference offensive player of the year is coming off a ’22 that saw him catch 68 passes for 1,325 yards and 13 touchdowns.
A redshirt sophomore, TeSlaa visited Iowa State last weekend. He began his Hawkeye official visit Friday.
Alex Washington, 6-2, 194, DB, Harvard: Iowa defensive coordinator and secondary coach Phil Parker visited Washington this week. The Alabama native told HF that he would be visiting the Hawkeyes next weekend.
Washington is a graduate transfer after earning a spot on the academic all-district team. He’s also a two-time all-Ivy League selection, picking off two passes and breaking up three others in ’22. He reports offers from Iowa, Duke and Boston College.
Seth Anderson, 6-0, 178, WR, Charleston Southern: The son of former NFL receiver Willie “Flipper” Anderson, Seth Anderson is the Big South Offensive Player of the Year for ’22 after catching 42 passes for 628 yards and seven touchdowns. He reports an offer from the Hawkeyes.
Anderson officially visited James Madison on Dec. 6. He was scheduled to be at Appalachian State this weekend.
A redshirt freshman, Anderson attended Suwanee (GA) North Gwinnett, the same high school where former Hawkeye running back Tyler Goodson prepped.
ALVANO CONSIDERING VISIT: The Hawkeyes have been involved with Omaha (NE) Westside High kicker Tristan Alvano for most of this calendar year. The Class of 2023 announced Friday that he had picked up a preferred walk-on opportunity from the Hawkeyes.
Special teams coordinator LeVar Woods is leading Iowa’s recruitment of Alvano, who reports scholarship offers from Nebraska and Boston College.
“I have an amazing relationship with coach Woods,” Alvano told HF. “He’s an amazing person and coach. His character is one of his best qualities, and I can tell he’s a very genuine person.”
Alvano is officially visiting the home-state Huskers this weekend. He’s considering a trip to Iowa next weekend.
Pulling Alvano (6-2, 285) out of Nebraska without a scholarship offer will be challenging for the Hawkeyes as he has opportunities at Power 5 schools willing to pay his tuition from the jump. Kohl’s Kicking ranks him as the No. 6 kicker nationally in the ’23 Class.
If Iowa were to offer Alvano, it likely would have two kickers on scholarship in ’23. True freshman walk-on Drew Stevens is in line for a scholarship after being named a Groza Award semifinalist as a true freshman this fall.
SMITH FLORES TAKING TIME: Ismael Smith Flores, the son of former Iowa all-American defensive end Leroy Smith, tells HF that he plans on waiting until February to sign his letter of intent. The 6-foot-6, 210-pound senior receiver from Arlington (TX) Martin High reports scholarship offers from Iowa, Michigan State, Rutgers, Tulane and Colorado State, among others.
Woods stopped in Texas this week to check on Smith Flores. The meeting was productive.
“It went great,” Smith Flores told HF. “Coach Woods is a great guy.”
Smith Flores officially visited Iowa on Oct. 28. He told HF that he hasn’t scheduled any more campus visits as of now.
