IOWA CITY, Iowa – Former Iowa quarterback Alex Padilla has found a new team.

Padilla announced Friday afternoon that he will transfer to Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

Padilla entered the transfer portal shortly after the end of the 2022 regular season in which he appeared in just two games.

The Colorado native started three games during the 2021 season when Spencer Petras was injured, and Iowa won all three games.

However, Padilla was replaced by Petras for the second half of the 2021 regular-season finale at Nebraska and would go on to be Petras’s backup for the 2022 Citrus Bowl, and throughout the 2022 regular season.

Padilla completed 21-of-43 passes for 173 yards and one touchdown this past season.

He also passed for 636 yards and two touchdowns during the 2021 season.

Padilla has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

SMU has to replace two-year starting quarterback Tanner Mordecai, who has transferred to Wisconsin after having passed for 3,524 yards and 33 touchdowns this past season. He also passed for 3,628 yards and 39 touchdowns during the 2021 season.
