MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Iowa baseball team defeated Minnesota, 18-4, on Saturday at Siebert Field.

“After a very long rain delay, I was really pleased with how our guys came out and played,” said head coach Rick Heller. “I thought we were really disciplined offensively against Holetz. We didn’t chase down in the zone, forced him to throw it up and got a five spot in the second. Gave Ty a bit of a cushion.”

Ty Langenberg got the start for the Hawkeyes throwing 4 1/3 innings and allowing four runs and striking out five. Jack Whitlock earned the win throwing 2 2/3 innings of one hit ball before Will Christophersen and Jared Simpson closed out the final two innings.

“Ty got us into the fifth, but he wasn’t sharp with his command despite having good stuff,” said Heller. “Too many free bases. Jack Whitlock came into a tough spot and Jack pitched great today out of the bullpen.”

Five Hawkeye hitters tallied multiple RBIs in the contest. Kyle Huckstorf and Sam Hojnar both had three while Ben Wilmes, Keaton Anthony, and Michael Seegers each had two. Wilmes had a home run and Anthony tallied two doubles.

“Offensively, we were able to score in six innings,” said Heller. “Took advantage of some free bases but the discipline that we showed all day long with the strike zones and our swing decisions was tremendous. I just loved how we came out and played hard and confident today.”

Iowa hit .818 (9-11) with runners on third with less than two outs and .694 (25-36) in advancement opportunities.
