Iowa City West athlete Mason Woods commits to Hawkeye football
Woods is son of Iowa Special Teams Coordinator LeVar Woods
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa football team had a built-in advantage with its recruitment of Iowa City West senior-to-be Mason Woods.
He is the son of Iowa special teams coordinator LeVar Woods, and a life-long Hawkeye fan.
So when it came time for Mason Woods to pick where he wants to play college football, he just couldn’t pass up the chance to be a Hawkeye.
Mason Woods announced his commitment to Iowa on Wednesday on X, which was formerly known as Twitter.
“Staying home,” Mason Woods said in his announcement.
The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Mason Woods is listed as an athlete by most recruiting services, though, he is expected to play tight end for Iowa.

“He’s a very good athlete, one of the top players in Iowa,” veteran recruiting analyst Tom Lemming said of Mason Woods.
Mason Woods is the eighth player to commit to Iowa’s 2025 recruiting class, and the third tight end, joining Thomas Meyer from Clear Lake and Eli Johnson from River Falls, Wisconsin.
Mason Woods picked Iowa over scholarships offers from schools that include Missouri, Kansas and Kansas State.
He is ranked as a three-star recruit by both On3Sports and Rivals.
“I think wherever they want him,” Lemming said when asked what position he sees Mason Woods playing in college. “I saw him on defense, so I didn’t know about tight end.
“He’s a good athlete, like his dad, and I think they could play him on either side of the ball.”
LeVar Woods played linebacker for Iowa under both Hayden Fry and current head coach Kirk Ferentz. He then played seven seasons in the NFL before launching his coaching career.
Iowa is also among the five finalists to land 2025 four-star defensive end Iose Epenesa, who is the son of former Iowa defensive lineman Eppy Epenesa, and the younger brother of former Iowa defensive end A.J. Epenesa, who now plays for the Buffalo Bills, and current Iowa linebacker Eric Epenesa.
Iose Epenesa took an official recruiting visit to Iowa earlier this month.
The Edwardsville, Illinois native is also considering, Missouri, Penn State, Utah and Miami (Fla.).
