Top-ranked 2025 Texas kicker/punter Scott Starzyk commits to Hawkeye football
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Special teams has been an ongoing strength for the Iowa football team and steps are being taken to make sure that doesn’t change.
Iowa has received a verbal commitment from 2025 kicker/punter Scott Starzyk, who is from The Woodland, Texas.
Starzyk is ranked as the No. 1 kicker in the 2025 class by Kohl’s Kicking Camps, and he reportedly picked Iowa over Syracuse and Mississippi State among others.
He will join an Iowa program that has excelled in all areas of special teams under special team’s coordinator LeVar Woods.
“Love the atmosphere and excited about the opportunity to play on some of the biggest stages while getting coached by one of the best special teams coordinators,” Starzyk said Friday in a text message.
Former Iowa punter Tory Taylor was named the winner of the 2023 Ray Guy Award, which goes to the nation’s top collegiate punter, while former kicker Keith Duncan was a consensus All-American in 2019.
Starzyk is expected to focus solely on kicking as a Hawkeye.
Iowa signed punter Rhys Dakin in its 2024 class. Dakin comes from Melbourne, Australia, which is also Tory Taylor’s hometown.
Iowa has two kickers on the current roster: junior Drew Stevens, who has made 34-of-44 field-goals attempts in his career, and redshirt freshman Tripp Woody.
Stevens and Woody both came to Iowa as walk-ons, while Starzyk will reportedly be on scholarship from the beginning.
