Hawk Fanatic podcast: Don Patterson breaks down win over Illinois State; looks ahead to Iowa State
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Even on Labor Day, former Iowa offensive coordinator Don Patterson was available to talk about Hawkeye football.
And there was plenty to talk about on Monday’s Hawk Fanatic radio show and podcast as Iowa crushed Illinois State 40-0 in the season opener this past Saturday at Kinnick Stadium.
Iowa quarterback Cade McNamara threw three touchdown passes, while true freshman receiver Reece Vander Zee caught two of them.
Running back Kaleb Johnson also ran for two touchdowns and had over 100 rushing yards despite not playing in the first half.
But now comes a much more daunting task next Saturday with Iowa State up next on Iowa’s schedule.
Don Patterson, who coached under Hayden Fry for 20 seasons at Iowa, and who was also the Western Illinois head coach from 1999 to 2009, looks back at the win over Illinois State and forward to the challenge in facing 1-0 Iowa State.
Don believes that one of the more critical and impactful matchups in the Iowa State game will be Iowa’s vaunted defense, which has a history of limiting big plays, against Iowa State’s big-play offense.
Don’s segment starts at the beginning of the 90-minute podcast and lasts for approximately one hour.
Enjoy his wisdom.
