Hawk Fanatic podcast: Don Patterson talks Hawkeye football and more
IOWA CITY, Iowa – It’s Monday during football season and that means another much-anticipated guest appearance by Don Patterson on the Hawk Fanatic radio show and podcast.
Don looks back at Iowa’s 38-21 victory over Troy this past Saturday at Kinnick Stadium and forward to this coming Saturday’s Big Ten opener against Minnesota in Minneapolis.
He takes a close look at the Iowa quarterback situation where Cade McNamara is expected to start his ninth game as a Hawkeye against the Gophers, including his third Big Ten game.
Don praised McNamara for his efficiency against Troy. McNamara completed 19 of 23 passes for 176 yards against Troy, and he didn’t throw an interception.
However, Don also believes that backup quarterback Brendan Sullivan should continue to play a role. Sullivan was used as part of a goal-line package against Troy and he completed a two-yard shovel pass to tight end Addison Ostrenga for a touchdown.
Don also looks at the success of the Iowa rushing attack, which has gained at least 200 rushing yards in three straight games for the first time since 2013.
Junior Kaleb Johnson currently leads the nation in rushing with 479 yards in 2 1/2 games as he was withheld from the first half against Illinois State in the season opener.
Don Patterson was a member of Hayden Fry’s Iowa coaching staff from start to finish from 1979 to 1998. He served as Fry’s offensive coordinator from 1992 to 1998.
Don was also the head coach for Western Illinois from 1999 to 2009.
His hour-long segment appears each Monday during football season, and starts at approximately 9 a.m.
