Hawk Fanatic podcast: Don Patterson talks Hawkeye football, breaks down QB situation
Brendan Sullivan out with injury; Cade McNamara expected to start against Maryland
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa football team is coming off a bye week, but Don Patterson isn’t.
The former Iowa offensive coordinator under Hayden Fry made his usual Monday appearance on the Hawk Fanatic radio show and podcast and addressed multiple topics, most notably the situation with the Iowa quarterbacks.
News broke Monday morning that Brendan Sullivan would not be available for Saturday’s game at Maryland due to an injury and that Cade McNamara would start at quarterback against the Terrapins, and that Colorado State transfer Jackson Stratton would be the backup.
Patterson said McNamara has a chance to end his Hawkeye career on a high note if he plays well in these final games. Patterson believes that the Iowa players will rally around McNamara since he has been a team captain for most of his time at Iowa.
Patterson, who also was the head coach for Western Illinois from 1999 to 2009, also addressed the Brian Ferentz storyline and whether it will have much impact on Saturday’s game.
Brian Ferentz was fired as the Iowa offensive coordinator with four games left in last season and he is now a Special Offensive Assistant for Maryland.
He is also the son of Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz.
Iowa is 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the Big Ten heading into Saturday’s game.
We always appreciate Don Patterson’s unique insight. He coached quarterbacks at Iowa, so to get his perspective on the current quarterback situation is very interesting and beneficial.
