Iowa QB Marco Lainez has entered transfer portal
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Redshirt freshman Marco Lainez is the latest Iowa quarterback to enter the transfer portal.
The New Jersey native posted his request to enter the portal on X Monday morning.
Lainez has not appeared in a game this season, and his only playing time as a Hawkeye came in the fourth quarter of last season’s 35-0 loss to Tennessee in the Citrus Bowl. He rushed for 57 yards on six carries in the Citrus Bowl, but only completed 2-of-7 passes for four yards.
Lainez joins graduate Cade McNamara and true freshman James Resar as Iowa quarterbacks who have entered the transfer portal, though Resar switched to receiver midway through this season.
Lainez was Iowa’s third quarterback on the depth chart for most of the 2024 season. He missed two games due to a broken thumb on his non-throwing hand.
Iowa is expected to have junior Brendan Sullivan and walk-on sophomore Jackson Stratton available at quarterback for the Dec. 30th game against Missouri in the Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tennessee.
Sullivan started against Wisconsin and UCLA before suffering an ankle injury in the third quarter against the Bruins, while Stratton started the final two regular-season games against Maryland and Nebraska, leading Iowa to wins in both games.
Stratton had been fourth on the depth chart behind Lainez, but then Lainez injured his thumb and was unavailable.
Kirk Ferentz said Sunday on a zoom conference that if he had to guess, Sullivan would start in the bowl game
