Iowa's head coach looks ahead to Sunday's game at Maryland
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery held a zoom conference Friday morning and addressed several topics, including, of course, Sunday’s matchup at Maryland.
Iowa is coming off an 84-73 win at Rutgers on Wednesday, a game in which the Hawkeyes trailed by nine points at halftime and were without starting forward Owen Freeman, starting point guard Drew Thelwell and freshman forward Cooper Koch due to injuries/health-related matters.
Fran McCaffery wasn’t sure if Thelwell would play against Maryland on Sunday, while, Freeman is out for the rest of the season after having had season-ending finger surgery. Koch is also out indefinitely due to an undisclosed health concern.
Thelwell was injured in the second half of last Sunday’s 74-63 loss to Wisconsin at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. He returned to the game briefly, but was in noticeable pain.
Fran McCaffery had high praise for junior guard Josh Dix, who led Iowa in scoring against Rutgers with 26 points.
As for the Maryland Terrapins, they have won two straight games, six of their last seven and eight of their last 10 games.
Maryland is 14-1 at the XFINITY Center this season, which includes a current a 11-game winning streak.
All five Maryland starters average in double figures, led by freshman center Derik Queen’s 15.9 per-game average.
