Will Slagle Discusses Hawkeye Offer
Grinnell Sophomore Taking Time
Will Slagle is a prep sophomore with Power-4 skills and a sound approach to finding a college. In a world moving fast, he’s taking it slow.
Iowa and Iowa State have offered the Grinnell High offensive lineman scholarships. He’s enjoyed getting to know the in-state programs and hopes to compare them to other schools.
“I’m approaching my recruitment as very neutral,” Slagle told HF. “I want to experience everywhere I can and figure out my very best fit. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit two amazing programs that are both in state and hold great values.”
The Cyclones offered on Jan. 31. Iowa followed suit last weekend when he visited for a junior day.
“I think coach (Kirk) Ferentz (Iowa) and coach (Matt) Campbell both run amazing programs. Both programs minimize their use of the portal and want to develop you as a player, which is one of my favorite beliefs of both programs.” Slagle said.
“I also love the idea that players aren’t at each team for the money. They are there to play football and most of all they are at those teams because of the programs. And those are definitely the cultures I want to be a part of.”
Slagle (6-4, 280) proves he’s an unusual 10th-grader during his season highlight video. The Tigers ask a lot of their left tackle, and he delivers.
The Hawkeyes liked what they saw. Offensive line coach George Barnett was especially impressed.
“The reason they gave me the offer was I fit in with the culture. I think to even be recruited by Iowa they want to make sure you fit in with their culture. Coach Barnett told me he’s very picky, like almost weirdly picky, as he said, which I think is a great thing,” Slagle said.
“So he told me he talked to a lot of other people as well as (trainer) JC Moreau. I don’t know what he talked about nor who he all talked to but that must’ve been a factor as well into giving me the offer.”
Kansas State, Minnesota, Northwestern and others are showing interest in the sophomore. It seems likely more scholarship offers are coming Slagle’s way.
“I really want to get to know Kansas State better. When I went to Manhattan last summer for camp, I loved the town and loved the campus. I really liked the coaches I met and think their team holds similar values to Iowa and Iowa State. I also know a couple people that attend school at Kansas State, and it sounds like a great school as well,” he said.
