IOWA CITY, Iowa – Ben McCollum has landed his first high school recruit as West Des Moines Valley center Trevin Jirak announced Friday that he has switched his commitment from Northern Iowa to Iowa.
The 6-foot-11 center is the first class of 2025 high school prospect McCollum has landed since taking the Iowa job nearly three weeks ago.
Jirak played a key role in helping Valley win three consecutive state titles from 2023 to 2025.
As a senior, Jirak was named 2025 Iowa Mr. Basketball. He averaged 16.2 points, 9.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.1 blocks per game while shooting 59.2 percent from the field. He also made 17 3-point baskets.
Jirak had previously signed with Northern Iowa in November, but he has since changed his mind and will now head to Iowa City to play for McCollum.
Iowa’s 2025-26 roster now consists of seven players, including the five Drake players that have signed with Iowa since McCollum was hired.
Drake set a school record with 31 victories in McCollum’s only season as head coach this past season. The Bulldogs also advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1971.
McCollum then cashed in on his success by landing the Iowa job shortly after Fran McCaffery was fired as head coach after 15 seasons.
McCollum has been rebuilding the Iowa roster almost from scratch and is now about halfway finished.
Freshman forward Cooper Koch also has decided to stay at Iowa and play for McCollum.
