IOWA CITY, Iowa – Former Rider All-American Sammy Alvarez has committed to the Iowa wrestling team.

The New Jersey native announced his commitment to the Hawkeyes Sunday on Instagram.

Alvarez finished seventh for Rider at 149 pounds at the 2025 NCAA Championships. He finished this past season with a 25-7 record, and has a 78-24 career record.

Alvarez originally committed and signed with North Carolina State coming out of high school before enrolling at Rutgers in 2019.

He then transferred to Oklahoma State, but he only spent slightly more than one year in Stillwater before transferring to Rider.

Alvarez will have one season of eligibility.

He was a three-time New Jersey state finalist, winning a state title as a senior in 2019.
