Iowa Adds Pella DE Schulte
Austin Schulte saw the writing on the wall and decided there was no need to drag things out. The Pella (IA) High defensive end verbally committed to Iowa Saturday night.
"Iowa offered me as a D-End and they had four spots open at that position (in the 2016 recruiting class). Two of them were already taken so I knew I had to make a decision fairly soon. I also wanted to choose a school before football got started at my school so I could play without worrying about choosing a college," he said.
Iowa held its recruiting tailgate this weekend but Schulte did not attend. Needless to say, it was busy around the facility and that kept him waiting to find a coach to which to commit.
"I tried calling Coach (Reese) Morgan but I kept getting his voicemail. So then I called Coach (Kirk) Ferentz and he sounded very excited," Schulte said.
Iowa offered the 6-foot-4, 240-pound Schulte a scholarship after he camped at the school earlier this month. The Hawkeyes landed another defensive lineman, Garret Jansen, off of the Class 3A state champion Pella squad in the ’15 cycle.
"It feels so amazing," Schulte said. "I am so thankful to be able to play for such a great school with a great coaching staff. It also relives a lot of stress from me. Now I can focus on my senior season and getting better as a player."
Schulte played tight end and linebacker during Pella’s run to the state title last fall. He caught five passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns. He racked up 53.5 tackles (15.5 for loss) and sacked the quarterback 4.5 times.
Schulte is believed to be one of 14 verbal commitments in Iowa’s ’16 group and the 12th since May 18.
