IOWA CITY, Iowa – Junior Tory Harman’s first career goal sent the University of Iowa soccer team to a 1-0 victory over in-state rival Iowa State in the opening event of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series on Friday night at the Iowa Soccer Complex. The Hawkeyes have won six of the last seven meetings in the series.

"Both teams fought hard tonight, it was a good competitive game," said head coach Dave DiIanni. "We have a lot of respect for the season Iowa State is having this year and we knew only a top level effort would do."

The Hawkeyes lone goal came in the first six minutes of the game when freshman Karsen Rauch sent a corner kick into the box that Harman headed out of the hands of ISU goalkeeper Lindsey Henden and into the net.

"It was very physical. That’s the nature of the rivalry. They are a strong team filled with a lot of upperclassmen," said DiIanni. "We knew physically we had to show up and battle for 50-50 balls. We thought we were more mobile than they were. In the first 70 minutes of the game, we moved the ball well against them."

Harman’s goal was all Iowa needed as the Hawkeye defense did its part to hold the Cyclones scoreless.

"When you control the tempo of the game for 70 minutes and you don’t score, momentum swings," said DiIanni. "We ended up defending a lot in the last 15 minutes, but we are strong at the back and organized."

The Cyclones outshot the Hawkeyes 15-9 with a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal, but couldn’t sneak one past senior goalkeeper Hannah Clark.

"We knew they were going to have opportunities, but we wanted them to take those opportunities where we forced them to," said DiIanni. "Most of those shots were wide and 30-yards out where Hannah could easily make those saves."

Clark tallied six saves on the day, including two diving saves in the first half on direct headers en route to her third shutout of the season. The win brings Clark’s career victory total to 34, the second- most in Iowa history and just one win shy of passing Emily Moran as the program’s all-time wins leader.

"It was pretty physical today, but I don’t mind it," said Clark. "Iowa State is always a big rivalry game for us, so being able to score a goal and hold off any goals against was big for us."

Tonight’s crowd of 1,314, ranks second in program history, shattering the previous second place record of 975 fans that watched the Iowa-Iowa State game in 2011.

Iowa (5-1-0) returns to action Sunday, hosting Illinois Chicago at 1 p.m. (CT).
