2019 Ohio guard Jordan Mitchell excited by Iowa offer
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa men’s basketball team has benefited from recruiting in Ohio under head coach Fran McCaffery.
Aaron White came to Iowa from Strongsville, Ohio as a lightly recruited player and then left as one of the best players in program history.
Iowa also has two players on its current roster from Ohio in freshman guard Maishe Dailey and sophomore forward Ahmad Wagner.
McCaffery hopes the trend continues and he benefits again after offering a scholarship to 2019 four-star shooting guard Jordan Mitchell on Wednesday.
Iowa is the fourth school to offer the 6-foot-6, 185-pound Mitchell a scholarship. He also has offers from Xavier, Ohio State and Florida.
Mitchell, a native of Gahanna, Ohio, knew that McCaffery and his staff had been closely evaluating him, but the offer still came as a surprise.
"It felt great to add a fourth offer under my belt with the other three," Mitchell said. "It was a little bit of both because they watched me a lot over the summer circuit and I had got some mail from them also. So I knew they were interested early. It was truly a blessing to get that offer from a program like Iowa."
Mitchell still was in elementary school when White became a Hawkeye in 2011. But Mitchell is aware of the Ohio pipeline under McCaffery.
"It means that I know if I committed they would already have some nice pieces there and would be bringing some in as well," Mitchell said.
Mitchell met recently with McCaffery at his high school and was impressed with McCaffery’s knowledge of basketball and his passion for the game.
"When Coach McCaffrey came up to the school I felt comfortable with him," Mitchell said. "His knowledge about the game of basketball is amazing. I hope to build a really good relationship with him and the rest of staff.
"They said they like very versatile players and they let their players run the floor and play free."
Mitchell said he plans to visit Iowa soon, but isn’t sure when that will be. He also doesn’t have a favorite school at this stage.
