IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa football team’s 2018 recruiting class is now complete and the coaching staff has wasted no time in trying to find its next crop of players for 2019.

Since signing day, Iowa has extended a flurry of scholarship offers to recruits from around the country.

Allhawkeyes.com takes a look at the five most important players for Iowa to sign in its 2019 class. 

The list includes three players from the state of Iowa, including decorated quarterback recruit Max Duggan, a native of Council Bluffs.

Iowa already has three commits in its 2019 class in Holstein, Iowa offensive lineman Ezra Miller, Norwalk, Iowa offensive lineman Tyler Endres and Orion, Ill. tight end Logan Lee.

1. Max Duggan, QB, Four-star, 7th, 6-2, 180, Council Bluffs, Iowa

Keeping in-state talent in state is important, especially when it’s one of the most decorated prospects in recent history at the most important position in football.

Iowa was the first school to offer Duggan but his stock has soared since and the Hawkeyes now must compete with the likes of Georgia, Ohio State and Penn State.

Duggan has visited Iowa several times and has developed a relationship with Iowa quarterbacks coach Ken O’Keefe.

Iowa has two factors in its favor in the recruitment of Duggan. The first being a proximity to his hometown of Council Bluffs, and the second being the opportunity to compete for the starting spot shortly after stepping on campus.

Current starter Nate Stanley is entering his junior year this fall and will have just one year of eligibility left when Duggan enters his freshman season.

Iowa also has just three quarterbacks on scholarship on their current roster after the departures of Ryan Boyle and Tyler Wiegers as graduate transfers.

Nebraska and new head coach Scott Frost provide a hitch in Iowa’s recruitment of Duggan.

Nebraska has been recruiting Duggan hard and can advertise a new culture under Frost.

Duggan was injured for much of last season and was not able to take many recruiting visits.

Duggan told Allhawkeyes on Thursday that he is in the process of scheduling spring visits and narrowing down his list of schools.

“I’m wide open right now recruiting wise,” Duggan told Allhawkeyes.com in December. “I’m going to take visits this spring or maybe even this winter when I get off crutches. Honestly, I’ll probably take visits with the schools and coaches that are the most involved with me and that talk to me a lot and I feel more comfortable at.”

2. Jirehl Brock, RB, Four-star, 11th, 6-0, 200, Quincy, Ill.

With Iowa having signed power back Henry Geil to its 2018 class, Brock’s speed and agility would make a nice compliment to Geil.

Brock will get another look at Iowa during a junior day visit on March 4.

Brock’s recruitment has slowed considerably due to his involvement in basketball, but he said that after basketball season is over he’s going to begin narrowing down his list of schools.

3. David Bell, WR, Four-star, 19th, 6-2, 180, Indianapolis, Ind.

Bell could end up being tougher to land than Duggan.

Iowa offered Bell early in the process, but the blue bloods of college football have come calling since.

Iowa landed three players from the Indianapolis area in 2018 and had another player, defensive back Larry Tracy, committed to its 2019 class until recently.

Iowa signed three receivers in its 2018 class, but Bell is the type of player that could make an immediate contribution at Iowa.

Though it has a heavy presence in Indianapolis, Iowa often struggles to out of state players with the type of offer list that Bell has.

4. Mosai Newsom, DE, Three-star, unranked, 6-5, 245, Waverly, Iowa

Newsom is another recruit in a talented in-state class.

Iowa waited to offer Newsom, but has hosted him on several visits and visited his school.

Newsom is also a good basketball player, which leaves little doubt as to his athletic ability.

Iowa has signed just one defensive end, West Des Moines native John Waggoner, in its last two recruiting classes and landing Newsom would be an important step in maintaining the depth Iowa has had at the position recently.

5. Jack Campbell, OLB, Three-star, unranked, 6-4, 210, Cedar Falls, Iowa

Keeping with the in-state trend, Campbell could be the next player to join Iowa’s 2019 class.

Iowa was the first to offer Campbell and he has been on campus a handful of times for visits.

Campbell said he intends to make his college decision later this spring.

“I’ll probably make a decision after basketball in late March or early April,” Campbell said.

Campbell also said he doesn’t have any favorites between the three schools that have offered him so far and that he’d like to make visits to Iowa and Iowa State before deciding.
