AH spring TV: Iowa running backs coach Derrick Foster updates progress being made at his position
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa used a running back by committee last season, and there are signs that the same thing could happen this coming season with the top three rushers returning.
Iowa running backs coach Derrick Foster addressed that topic and several others topics while meeting with the media for nearly 30 minutes on Tuesday.
Juniors Mekhi Sargent, Toren Young and Ivory Kelly Martin all return after making significant contributions at running back last season. Sargent led Iowa with 745 ruhsing yards last season followed by Young with 637 yards and Kelly-Martin with 341 yards.
Kelly-Martin was the starter when last season began, but he was hampered by injuries throughout the season and was ultimately passed on the depth chart by Sargent, who played well down the stretch.
Foster also talked about the younger running backs in the program and about incoming freshmen running backs Tyler Goodson from Georgia and Shadrick Byrd from Alabama.
Byrd is practicing with Iowa this spring after enrolling in school in January.
