Iowa lands 2024 tight end from Omaha
Michael Burt picks Iowa over multiple scholarship offers, including one from Nebraska
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Michael Burt is from Omaha, Nebraska, or in other words, he lives in the heart of Cornhusker land.
But when it came time to pick where he wanted to play college football, Burt’s heart was with the Iowa Hawkeyes as he committed to Iowa on Thursday.
Burt, a 2024 tight end from Creighton Prep High School in Omaha, announced his commitment to Iowa via Twitter.
“I am extremely honored to announce I have committed to the University of Iowa to continue my academic and football career. Go Hawkeyes!!” Burt wrote on Twitter.
The 6-foot-5, 230-pound Burt reportedly has nearly a dozen scholarship offers from schools that include Nebraksa, Minnesota and Illinois.
Burt took an official visit to Iowa less than two weeks ago and was very impressed with what he saw, and with what he heard on his visit.
He also likes Iowa’s success with developing standout tight ends, and how Iowa uses its tight ends.
“What stood out to me most was the way they run offense using the tight end,” Burt said. ‘”I’m feeling like I know it could be a great option.”
Iowa’s top returning player at the position, Luke Lachey, played host to Burt during his official.
“He’s extremely nice and a really good tight end,” Burt said.
Iowa has benefitted before from having a tight end from Omaha on its roster as former Hawkeye and current NFL tight end Noah Fant earned All-Big Ten accolades during his three-year career from 2016-18.
Burt caught 11 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown during eight games this past season, according to Max Preps. He added three carries for 23 yards.
When Iowa and the other Big Ten schools offered Burt scholarships earlier this month, the major recruiting networks did not yet rank him. On3 and 247Sports have since rated him a three-star prospect and the No. 8 overall player in Nebraska for 2024.
Burt is the 12th player to commit to Iowa’s 2024 recruiting class.
