IOWA CITY, Iowa – The No. 11 ranked University of Iowa soccer team defeated Indiana, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Iowa Soccer Complex. The Hawkeyes remain unbeaten and move to 10-0-3 on the season and 5-0-1 in Big Ten conference play. The Hawkeyes sit in a three-way tie for first place in the Big Ten.
The Hawkeyes outshot the Hoosiers six to four in the first half and had three corner kicks while the Hoosiers didn’t have any in the first 45 minutes. Iowa put two shots on goal in the first half that were both saved by the Indiana goalkeeper. The Iowa defense didn’t allow a shot on goal in the first half.
At the break, the game remained a scoreless tie, 0-0.
The Hawkeyes added the first and only score of the game in the 73rd minute. The goal was scored by graduate student Maya Hansen, her fifth goal of the season. Hansen now has the second most goals on the team trailing freshman Berit Parten. The goal was assisted by senior Meike Ingles, her team leading fourth assist of the season.
The Hawkeye defense posted their seventh shutout of the season as the Hawkeyes outshot the Hoosiers eight to three in the second half. Graduate student Macy Enneking had two saves in the second half for the Hawkeyes.
HEAR FROM HEAD COACH DAVE DIIANNI
“I thought we had a great start to the game. We created some really good opportunities. We didn’t take advantage of the opportunities early on. Credit to Indiana, they had a good game plan. I thought we didn’t handle their pressure very well in the first half. We didn’t give up anything dangerous, the game was in transition pretty much for 90 minutes.”
“I thought we did a lot of the little things right. Blocking shots, heading balls in the box. I don’t know if we win this game last year, in term of doing the little things right for a long period of time until we get confidence and get the right person on the ball and in the box. Maya Hansen is a goal scorer and that was a goal scorer’s goal. I thought it was a well-played game for us against a team that was incredibly hungry.”
