Video: Morale is high for Hawkeye football after 40-16 win over Washington
By Dallas Jones
IOWA CITY, IOWA – For the first time ever, the Iowa Hawkeyes hosted the Washington Huskies in Kinnick Stadium. In their Big Ten home opener, the Hawkeyes welcomed the Huskies to the conference with an elite display of football at every level.
Iowa came off a brutal loss at Ohio State last week, while the Huskies took down the reigning National and Big Ten Champion Michigan Wolverines. The nations best back (besides Ashton Jeanty), Kaleb Johnson dominated yet another game for the Hawkeyes with 188 all purpose yards and three touchdowns.
While Johnson and the Hawkeye offensive line looked good, there was some left to be desired from the Hawkeye passing game, which only produced 108 yards. The Huskies somehow out gained the Hawkeyes 393 to 328 in their 24 point loss.A big factor in that was the play of the Iowa defense as they gave the offense a short field often today.
They forced multiple turnovers, three turnovers on downs, one interception, strip sack and even a blocked field goal.
Washington put together multiple long drives on the Hawkeye defense in the first half and throughout the game, but if they are not converted into touchdowns, it doesn’t matter.
Long story short, they made plays when they needed to, but giving up over 300+ yards is not something the Iowa defense wants to get accustomed to.
