Iowa QB Jackson Stratton enters transfer portal as graduate transfer

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa reserve quarterback Jackson Stratton has decided to enter the transfer portal with two years of eligibility remaining.
“With 2 years of eligibility remaining; I’ll be entering the transfer portal as a graduate transfer and proud graduate of the University of Iowa,” Stratton posted on social media. “I will always be a Hawkeye and am looking forward to the next chapter, new challenges and the chance to keep doing what I love.”
A native of Mission Bay, California, the 6-foot-4, 205-pound Stratton started his career at Colorado State before transferring to Iowa prior to the 2024 season as a walk-on.
He wasn’t expected to get much playing time last season, but then the quarterback position was hit hard by injuries.
Stratton played in three games in 2024, starting two games at quarterback. He completed 21-of-35 passes for 219 yards for the season.
He completed 10-of-14 passes for 76 yards in 29-13 win at Maryland, and then completed eight-of-15 passes for 115 yards (career-high long of 72 yards) and one touchdown in 13-10 win over Nebraska.
He also came off the bench against UCLA and completed three-of-six passes for 28 yards and rushed once for 14 yards in the 20-17 loss in.
Stratton hasn’t played in a game this season.
His decision to enter the portal, coupled with starting quarterback Mark Gronowski using up his eligibility this season, will leave Iowa with three scholarship quarterbacks and one walk-on quarterback heading into the offseason, The three quarterbacks on scholarship are redshirt freshman Jeremy Hecklinski, sophomore Hank Brown and true freshman Jimmy Sullivan, while the walk-on is true freshman Ryan Fitzgerald, the son of former Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald, who is reportedly on the verge of becoming the new head coach at Michigan State.
Iowa also recently received a verbal commitment from 2026 quarterback and Utah native Tradon Bessinger, who was previously committed to Boise State.
Of course, Iowa also would have the option of adding a quarterback, or more than one quarterback, from the transfer portal.
