IOWA CITY, Iowa – Addie Deal’s much-anticipated career as an Iowa women’s basketball player apparently has ended after just one season.

The former five-star recruit from Irvine, California announced Monday on social media that she plans to enter the transfer portal after playing her freshman season for the Hawkeyes.

Deal, a 6-foot guard, played in all 34 games for Iowa this season, making three starts.

She averaged 5.1 points and 1.2 rebounds per game and made the Big Ten All-Freshmen team.

Deal is the second Iowa player to announce her decision to enter the portal since the season ended, joining guard Kennise Johnson, who only appeared in six game this past season.

Deal joined the Iowa program last summer with enormous hype as a five-star recruit.

And while she certainly had her moment this season, Deal also struggled with consistency, including shooting just 29.7 percent from 3-point range where she made 22-of-74 attempts. She also shot 39.4 percent from the field overall, making 67-of-170 shots.

Deal also had more turnovers (59) than assists (56) this season while playing an average of 15.6 minutes per game.

Iowa already had to replace guards Kylie Feuerbach and Taylor McCabe, both of whom used up their eligibility this season.

But with Deal and Johnson now planning to enter the portal, that’s at least four guards that will have to be replaced.

Iowa still has point guard Chit-Chat Wright and combo guard Taylor Stremlow on the roster as they started 31 and 18 games, respectively, this season as sophomores.

The 5-4 Wright averaged 12.5 points per game this season and shot 44.0 percent from 3-point range, making 70-of-159 attempts.

The Atlanta, Georgia native transferred to Iowa last summer after playing her freshman season at Georgia Tech.

Stremlow averaged 7.9 points per game this past season and led Iowa with 146 assists.

Wright was second on the team with 138 assists.

Iowa finished 27-7 this past season under second-year head coach Jan Jensen and lost to Virginia 83-75 in double overtime in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes also finished 15-3 in Big Ten play and were the No. 2 seed in Big Ten Tournament and its NCAA regional.

Iowa has another five-star recruit from California set to join the team next season in 6-2 forward McKenna Woliczok, who is from the San Jose area.

She signed a national letter of intent with Iowa in November.
