Gustafson, Disterhoft have career nights in victory over Oral Roberts

IOWA CITY, Iowa – When the fire alarm went off during the second quarter of the Iowa women's basketball team's 96-76 blowout victory over Oral Roberts on Friday, you could have thought it was because of the play of senior guard Ally Disterhoft and sophomore forward Megan Gustafson was lighting the nets on fire and not smoke from the Carver-Hawekeye Arena kitchen.
Disterhoft and Gustafson scored career-highs of 29 and 25 points respectively in the first game of a season-opening women's and men's doubleheader.
Gustafson also finished with 12 rebounds to record her tenth career double-double.
Patience was a virtue for Disterhoft, who a near perfect 9-of-10 shooting from the floor and only attempted one three point shot. She also went 11-of-13 from the free throw line.
"I think (what was working for me) was just focusing on shot selection," Disterhoft said. "Identifying if this is a good shot or if I can pass up that shot and give my teammate a better shot. Just being selective about what kinds of shots I'm taking and trying to get my teammates involved, trying to set them up if I don't have something myself."

Gustafson's strength training during the offseason showed against Oral Roberts as most of her points came by way of high percentage shots thanks to some nifty moves and battling for position under the basket.
"That's something I've really been focusing on in the weight room," Gustafson said. "Just trying to work on my footwork and it's helped me get stronger and get some of those rebounds. My teammates did a great job of setting me up and seeing when I'm open down low. If I'm doubled or they're collapsing inside I'm looking for the open person and then my teammates do a great job of setting me up."
