Iowa City High athlete Drew Larson commits to Iowa football as walk-on

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa football team continues to build on its strong 2024 preferred walk-on class with the addition of Iowa City High athlete Drew Larson, who is fulfilling a life-long dream.
The 6-foot-1, 180-pound quarterback/defensive back announced his commitment to Iowa via his “X” account, saying it was a, “dream come true.”
Larson turned down at least one Division II scholarship offer in order to follow his dream.
He will likely play safety for Iowa, but no final decision has been made about his position with the Hawkeyes.
Larson was also a standout quarterback for the Little Hawks, although, a thumb injury in week two limited him to just 330 passing yards as a senior. He continued to play safety for the Little Hawks and had two interceptions.
Even with the injury, Larson still made first-team all-district and first team all-conference.
Larson will join an Iowa program program that has a long-standing tradition under Kirk Ferentz of using walk-on in key roles, especially at the safety position.
Senior Quinn Schulte has started 23 games at free safety for Iowa after having joined the program as a walk-on from Cedar Rapids Xavier. Other former walk-ons who have excelled at the safety position include Derek Pagel, Brett Greenwood and Jack Koerner.
Larson’s recruitment started with offensive coordinator and former Little Hawk Brian Ferentz visiting him at his high school late last year.
Larson said the decision to play for Iowa was an “easy one” because it has been his goal since he was a child.
Larson is the grandson of former Iowa football player and former Hawkeye assistant coach Dave Triplett.
Laron joins a 2024 preferred walk class that also includes Rock Valley linebacker Graham Eben, Grundy Center defensive tackle Trent Cakerice, Carroll Kuemper Catholic tight end D.J. Vonnahme and Waverly Shell-Rock tight end Cole Marsh.
