What We Learned: Reese Morgan on D-Line
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa Defensive Line Coach Reese Morgan met with the media on Wednesday as part of the assistant coaching press conference series here at the Iowa Football Complex.
Here’s "What We Learned" during Morgan’s session:
-With Drew Ott and Nate Meier projected to return as starters at defensive end, the search is on for a third man to spell those guys. Matt Nelson appears to be leading for that job.
"You know, with six practices left you hate to anoint anyone. They have to earn it and so forth, but I think Matt has got a pretty good opportunity to be that guy. Now we’ve got to look for another guy, and there are some candidates, Melvin Spears and Parker Hesse and some other guys that are working towards that opportunity," Morgan said.
-Jaleel Johnson and Nathan Bazata are holding down the starting tackle spots vacated by Carl Davis and Louis Trinca Pasat. Morgan indicated that there would be a rotation of some kind inside. He mentioned Faith Ekakitie and junior college transfer Kyle Terlouw as candidates for that as well as Darian Cooper, who still has not been medically cleared after missing last season following knee surgery.
-Morgan talked a lot about guys he recruited playing his position and others, like Brandon Scherff, Boone Myers, Ike Boettger, Nate Meier, Drew Ott, Nathan Bazata an others. He has a knack for finding the diamonds in the rough.
-The veteran coach also talked about what drives him to keep coaching.
