Hooker Happy with Hawkeye Offer
Iowa’s courtship with Amani Hooker is moving fast.
The Hawkeyes began speaking with the Minnesota safety about two weeks ago. Friday, they offered him a scholarship. The next day, head coach Kirk Ferentz, defensive coordinator Phil Parker and recruiting coordinator Seth Wallace spoke with him on the phone.
In April, South Dakota and Northern Iowa offered Hooker a scholarship. Iowa became his first FBS opportunity.
"I am just getting to know Iowa more and more. (The offer) makes a huge impression. It shows how interested they are in me," the 6-foot-1, 195-pounder from Brooklyn Park (MN) Park Center High said.
Hooker likes what he’s found out about the Hawkeyes so far.
"They’re a great football school and have a great education all around," he said.
An accomplished athlete, Hooker also plays for the Park Center basketball team as well as the reputable Howard Pulley AAU program.
In 10 games as a junior, Hooker caught 34 passes for 702 yards and eight touchdowns. On defense he added 53 tackles (five for loss). He’s started on the varsity since he was a freshman.
"Iowa likes my versatility, my size and my break on the ball. It was a little surprising they offered because they haven’t talked with me much before but I’m certainly happy about it," he said.
Iowa State, Minnesota and Wisconsin also are recruiting Hooker. He’s set to camp at Wisconsin (May 31) and Minnesota (June 7). He plans to visit Iowa on June 14 or 15.
"I feel like I’m closer to getting an offer from Wisconsin out of all of them. I’m in more contact with them (than Iowa State and Minnesota)," he said.
Hooker said he’d like to major in business with a minor in physical science. He hopes to have his college commitment made by the start of his senior season.
"I’m looking for a school that has a winning history and I want the coaches to want me to succeed not only on the field but off the field and after the college life," he said.
