IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa football coaching staff is staying noticeably more aggressive when it comes to recruiting.
The latest proof is 2017 dual-threat quarterback Kamron Fields from Garland, Tex. Iowa just recently extended Fields his first scholarship offer.
Iowa is the only school to have offered Fields a scholarship to this point. He is just now getting familiar with the recruiting process and in no hurry to make a decision.
But Iowa has certainly made an impression as the first school to offer Fields a scholarship.
“With Iowa showing so much love and being my first and only offer, I would say they’re at the top of my list,” Fields said Monday.
The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Fields also has drawn interest from Kansas, Colorado State and Oklahoma State.
He is the second dual-threat quarterback from the 2017 class to whom Iowa has recently offered a scholarship, the other being Jonathan Lewis from New Jersey.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz extended more than 200 scholarships nationwide in the 2016 class. Iowa received verbal commitments from all but two of the 24 players in the 2016 class before the 2015 football season had even started.
Fields said the Iowa coaches like his ability to spread the field and give the offense more versatility as a dual-threat quarterback.
The coaches used Brad Banks as an example of how a dual-threat quarterback can excel at Iowa. Banks finished runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 2002, leading Iowa to an undefeated record in the Big Ten for the first time in 80 years.
“With me being a dual-threat quarterback, they see that I can open up the playbook more with not only my arm, but with my feet as well,” Fields said.
Fields said he hopes to visit Iowa this summer.
