2017 Kansas City DB commits to Iowa
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Kansas City defensive back Djimon Colbert recently had trimmed his list of schools to Iowa and Nebraska.
He hadn’t planned on making a final decision on Sunday, but changed his mind while attending a junior day event at Iowa.
Colbert announced on Twitter on Sunday that he committed to Iowa.
"To be honest, coming down there at first I had no intentions on committing today," Colbert said Sunday night. "I had always had them at number one, though. So when I got there and felt the atmosphere of the campus and the people, I knew that it was time.
"It feels amazing! I know now I have a secure spot with them and I can start building relationships early."
Colbert is the seventh member of the 2017 senior class to commit to Iowa, and the first skill player to join the 2017 class.
Iowa made an immediate impression on Colbert as the first school to offer him a scholarship. He has since bonded with the Iowa coaches and feels confident that he could reach his potential as a Hawkeye.
"The biggest deciding factor) was that Iowa has always been special to me since they were the first to offer and I really feel comfortable with their coaches," Colbert said. "I knew that I could help start building something special there"
In addition to Colbert, who is ranked as a three-star recruit by Rivals, Iowa’s 2017 recruiting class also has four players from instate: North Fayette defensive tackle Juan Harris, Madrid defensive end Coy Kirkpatrick, Mount Vernon offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs and Solon tight end Jacob Coons.
The most heralded player in Iowa’s 2017 class is five-star defensive end A.J. Epenesa, who is from Edwardsville, Ill., and the son of former Iowa defensive lineman Epey Epenesa. The younger Epenesa committed to Iowa in January.
In other recruiting news, West Des Moines Valley quarterback Rocky Lombardi and Spirit Lake offensive lineman Zach Dykstra both announced on Twitter on Sunday that they had received a scholarship offer from Iowa. They also were in Iowa City on Sunday to attend the junior day event.
Iowa has offered scholarships to at least seven players from instate in the 2017 class. Bettendorf offensive lineman Mark Kallenberger also reportedly has an Iowa offer.
Veteran recruiting analyst Tom Lemming also was in Iowa City on Sunday to meet with the junior prospects. He praised the talent from instate in the 2017 class and thinks as many as nine juniors could be offered by Iowa.
