Texas QB has Iowa near the top after scholarship offer
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Quarterback Peyton Mansell is the latest in a growing list of high school players from Texas to receive a scholarship offer from the Iowa Hawkeyes.
The offer is Mansell’s first from a Power 5 school and it puts the Hawkeyes near the top of his list.
“It feels good,” said Mansell, a native of Belton, Texas. “Especially when it’s from a high-caliber school and a program like Iowa.
“It’s hard to come up with an order just because I’ve only had the opportunity to see a few of the schools that have offered me, but Iowa would definitely be near the top.”
Iowa offensive coordinator Greg Davis, who also coaches the quarterbacks, recently met with Mansell at his high school in Texas.
“Coach Davis said he liked what he saw on film,” Mansell said. “Then when he came and saw me in person he said he knew I could play in their system.”
The 6-foot-2, 195-pounds Mansell is listed as a pro-style quarterback, but he sees himself more as a dual-threat, evidenced by his 789 rushing yards as a junior last season.
“I think of myself as a dual-threat quarterback,” Mansell said. “I’m not the fastest guy in the world, but I can move a bit.
“I’m an effective runner. I can bang out five to six yards every time I get the ball.”
Mansell said he plans to attend a couple of satellite camps this summer and would like to make his college decision before his senior season begins.
As a junior, Mansell completed 140-of-241 passes for 1,712 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also was intercepted just three times last season.
Mansell is also hearing from Minnesota, Illinois, San Diego State and Coastal Carolina.
