Monday’s podcast features 30 minutes with an emotional Bret Bielema
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema takes a trip down memory lane on Monday as the guest on our latest podcast.
He starts the 30-minute interview by paying tribute to broadcasting legend Bob Brooks, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 89.
Bielema then talks about joining the Iowa football team as a 6-foot-6, 195-pound walk-on linebacker in 1988 and then growing into a 290-pound starting defensive lineman.
He also talks about his brief flirtation with the NFL, which Bielema said lasted for about six days, and about his climb up the coaching ladder.
Bielema gets emotional at times during the interview, especially while talking about the death of his sister and how she inspires him each day.
He also has high praise for all the head coaches he worked under, from Hayden Fry to Kirk Ferentz to Bill Snyder to Barry Alvarez.
And yes, Bielema talks about his famous Tigerhawk tattoo and the pride that comes with it.
He also brings up the possibility of Iowa and Arkansas facing each other at a neutral site such as Kansas City, Mo.
We squeezed a lot of information and emotion into 30 minutes. It was a pleasure talking to a former Hawkeye who is now one of the most recognizable coaches in college football.
