2017 Texas DT Damion Daniels high on Hawks
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa football team missed out on four-star defensive tackle Darrion Daniels two years ago.
Iowa hopes to reverse its luck with his younger brother, Damion Daniels.
Three-star defensive tackle Damion Daniels announced his top 12 schools early this summer and plans to narrow that list to five during his senior season at Bishop Dunne High School in Dallas, Texas.
Iowa finds itself in good position to land the younger Daniels brother in the 2017 class.
"(I’m going to release) a top five sometime during the season," Damion Daniels said. "Iowa is in there for sure. They are up there with Nebraska."
The 6-foot-2, 310-pound Damion Daniels is a high school teammate of Iowa commit and four-star cornerback Chevin Calloway.
They also are close friends as Daniels held the camera during Calloway’s commitment to Iowa, which he announced on Periscope.
Calloway’s commitment to Iowa’s 2017 class gives the Hawkeyes an advantage with Damion Daniels that no other school can match.
Iowa didn’t have that same edge when Daniels’ older brother, Darrion Daniels, signed with Oklahoma State.
"It means a lot," Damion Daniels said. "Chevin and I have been playing together since seventh grade and it would be great to play with him for the next three to four years also."
Iowa currently has five players from the state of Texas committed to the 2017 class, headlined by Calloway and four-star running back Eno Benjamin.
Damion Daniels has yet to visit Iowa, but has heard a lot of positive feedback about the Hawkeyes from his Texas peers.
"They just told me how the environment is," Damion Daniels said. "(They told me) it’s just beautiful on and off campus, how great the coaches are and that the coaches will take players under their wing like a mother and father would."
Daniels said the Iowa coaches like his physical style of play and the way he dominates on the field.
Daniels plans to take all five official visits, including one to Iowa, before making a decision.
