LINCOLN, Neb. – The University of Iowa baseball team fell to No. 25 Nebraska, 8-6, on Sunday afternoon at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.
“We had our chances today but had some bad at-bats in the fourth and seventh innings when we had them on the ropes,” said head coach Rick Heller. “After scoring two in the first, we allowed five runs over the first three innings. Jaron Bleeker pitched as well as he has all year. A defensive miscue kept the seventh alive for them, and Carey delivered the double. Kooper Schulte had a great day, homering to lead off the game and again in the eighth.”
The Hawkeyes struck first in the opening inning with a solo home run from senior Kooper Schulte. Shortly after, senior Caleb Wulf singled to the right side, scoring senior Gable Mitchell, to give Iowa an early 2-0 lead.
Nebraska responded with one run in the bottom of the first, then added two runs in each the second and third innings to take a 5-2 lead.
Iowa battled back in the fifth, tying the game with three runs. Redshirt sophomore Jaxien Frost was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in a run, and senior Ben Swails followed with a two-run single up the middle.
The Huskers answered in the bottom of the seventh with three runs to regain control. Schulte added his second home run of the game to pull the Hawkeyes within two, but Nebraska ultimately held on for the win.
Graduate student Logan Runde started the game for Iowa, throwing 1 1/3 innings before giving way to Cole Moore who threw an inning. Jaron Bleeker threw the remaining 5 1/3 innings striking out five.
