IOWA CITY, Iowa – This podcast features nearly a full hour with former Iowa defensive coordinator Bill Brashier.

Hayden Fry never had to worry about his defense because he trusted Brashier to get the job done. The 87-year old Brashier was considered a defensive genius and was instrumental in Iowa’s resurgence under Fry in the early 1980s.

Brashier says in the interview that Fry never second-guessed any of his decisions on defense. Fry also let Brashier pick all the defensive starters.

Their relationship went beyond just coaching together. Fry and Brashier both were born in Eastland, Texas and have been friends since they were kids.

Brashier retired as the Iowa defensive coordinator after the 1995 season. He and his wife, Ann, still live on the east side of Iowa City.

Even with his Texas roots, Brashier says he hasn’t given any thought about leaving Iowa City since he retired. He loves the environment and cherishes his bond with the University of Iowa.

So listen here for the Brashier interview:
