Iowa quarterback Deacon Hill has entered transfer portal

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Barely one year after joining the Iowa football team, quarterback Deacon Hill is back in the transfer portal.
The Santa Barbara, California native entered the portal on Tuesday, and just three days after Iowa finished spring practice.
Hill reportedly took most of the snaps as the No. 1 quarterback in the spring, but that was only because expected starter Cade McNamara is recovering from knee surgery.
Hill started the final nine games for Iowa last season after McNamara suffered a season-ending knee injury in the fifth game against Michigan State.
However, it was a struggle for Hill as he only completed 48.6 percent of his passes for 1,152 yards and five touchdowns.
Hill was also benched in the fourth quarter of Iowa’s 35-0 loss to Tennessee in the Citrus Bowl after he had committed three turnovers.
The 6-foot-3, 258-pound Hill transferred to Iowa from Wisconsin in January 2023 and would go on to win the No. 2 quarterback spot behind McNamara during spring practice.
Hill had previously been committed to Fordham, but changed his mind after Iowa offered him a scholarship.
There has been speculation that Iowa plans to add a quarterback from the portal in the near future.
That makes more sense now with Hill in the portal.

McNamara and redshirt freshman Marco Lainez are currently the only Iowa quarterbacks on scholarship.
Florida quarterback James Resar will join the team this summer on scholarship.
