Nate Wieland commits to Iowa
By Tyler Devine
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Nate Wieland just couldn't say no to Iowa.
The City High senior grew up wanting to be an Iowa football player and when the offer came on Thursday, Northern Illinois didn't stand a chance.
Wieland had a contingency plan just in case an Iowa offer never came, and that was to play quarterback for Northern Illinois where he had been committed for several months.
The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Wieland first announced his de-commitment from Northern Illinois on Twitter and then wasted little time before announcing his commitment to Iowa.

Wieland was a three-year starter at quarterback for City High, but he also played some on defense at linebacker and safety. Wieland is expected to play outside linebacker in college.
As a senior at City, Wieland passed for 1,671 yards and nine touchdowns and five interceptions. He also rushed for 741 yards and 11 touchdowns on 129 attempts and was a first-team 4A all-District 7 selection at quarterback.
On defense, Wieland had 7.5 tackles for loss while playing defensive end and outside linebacker.
Wieland is the 16th overall commitment in Iowa's 2017 class, the sixth from the state of Iowa and the fourth from within a 25-mile radius of Iowa City.
The other three players from the Iowa City area are Mount Vernon offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs, Solon tight end Jacob Coons and Mid-Prairie defensive end Levi Duwa.
