AH TV: Fran McCaffery, Peter Jok, Dale Jones and more talk about Sunday’s big win
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa men's basketball team will enter the Big Ten Tournament next week as one of the hottest teams in the conference.
Iowa (18-13, 10-8 Big Ten) extended its winning streak to four games by defeating Penn State 90-79 in the regular-season finale and before a sellout crowd of 15,400 on Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The game was filled with emotion as Iowa honored its two seniors – Peter Jok and Dale Jones – before the game.
Iowa coach Fran McCaffery showed his appreciation for Jones by inserting the oft-injured forward from Waterloo into the starting lineup. The move paid immediate dividends as Jones scored Iowa's first points in the game on a 3-point basket.
"I just knew he was going to make one," McCaffery said of Jones. "He's just too good of a shooter."
Iowa led 47-36 at halftime despite Jok only scoring one point in the first half. He only played five minutes in the first half after picking up two early fouls.
The 6-foot-6 senior came out firing in the second half and scored the first eight points for Iowa. Jok led five Iowa players in double figures with 21 points, including 20 in the second half.
Iowa made 31 baskets on 24 assists. Reserve point guard Christian Williams led the Hawkeyes with six assists despite only playing 14 minutes off the bench.
"It says we're moving the ball, sharing the ball," McCaffery said of having five players in double figures. "That's how you get five guys in double figures.'
Sophomore forward Nicholas Baer continued his stellar play off the bench by scoring 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in 23 minuters of action. The former walk-on from Bettendorf made all four of his 3-point baskets and has scored in double figures in four consecutive games.
"Baer is the heart of this team," Jok said.
Iowa had a 42-14 advantage in bench points and had 10 players who scored in Sunday's game.
The Hawkeyes will be the No. 7 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and will face either Nebraska or Indiana next Thursday in Washington D.C.
