AH Week 1 picks
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The start of another college football season also means the return of our weekly picks.
Our panel will consist of Allhawkeyes staff members Pat Harty, Tyler Devine and our newest addition, Dylan Burn. We also plan to have a guest picker at times during the season.
We take our picks seriously, but also try to have fun with our comments.
So here we go with another season:
Pat Harty
Iowa: 34, Wyoming 21: Akrum Wadley slips three times in the first half on the tiger hawk logo at midfield, causing it to be removed at halftime.
Iowa State 31, Northern Iowa 17: It almost feels like I'm picking an upset, which says more about the Cyclones than the Panthers.
Michigan 24, Florida 23: Jim Harbaugh is caught picking his nose, tweeting and podcasting during the game.
Alabama 30, Florida State 27: Nick Saban is caught smiling briefly at the end of game, although, he gets angry and denies it when asked by reporters if it truly happened.
Texas 35, Maryland 24: The Terrapins are caught looking ahead to next week's home opener against Towson.
Tyler Devine
Iowa 35, Wyoming 24: Brian Ferentz calls seven reverses, two statue of liberty plays and a fumblerooski in his debut as offensive coordinator and Iowa fans complain that he's "getting too cute out there."
Northern Iowa 13, Iowa State 10: There's no storm brewing for Iowa State on this day as it gets caught looking ahead to its biggest game of the year against Iowa.
Michigan 27, Florida 24: Jim Harbaugh waits until halftime to release his depth chart but it's too late for Florida to figure it out and Michigan comes away with a win.
Alabama 50, Florida State 45: Insert generic "Nick Saban never smiles" joke.
Texas 33, Maryland 22: Tom Herman sacrifices a bunch of turtles at midfield before the game as the Longhorns take it to the Terrapins in Texas in front of tens of thousands.
Dylan Burn
Iowa 23, Wyoming 16: This is a tough opener for a Hawkeye team that has a lot of question marks. Obviously we know their strengths, but will they be able to move the ball through the air? They are an 11.5 point favorite, I'll take the Hawkeyes, but I don't think they cover.
Michigan 30, Florida 20: I might've thought about picking Florida a few weeks ago, but it seems like everybody has been suspended since then. Give me the Wolverines even though I think they are wildly overrated this year.
Florida State 27, Alabama 24: Probably the most exciting week one game is between the Noles and Tide. FSU returns a Heisman candidate in Deondre Francois and then a their Swiss Army knife on defense in Derwin James. Bama is loaded as usual, but I like the Noles in an upset.
Iowa State 34, Northern Iowa 20: This is a game the Panthers normally win, but I actually like what Matt Campbell is building in Ames. They'll struggle throughout the year, but I like them to beat the Panthers here.
Texas 38, Maryland 24: DJ Durkin is building a winner in College Park, but I still think the Terps are a few years away. Under new head man Tom Herman I expect the Longhorns to be a solid group this year. Give me Texas here.
